Essential professional development for current or aspiring government relations practitioners in the not-for-profit sector.
This six-part course (delivered over 8 weeks) is designed to provide not-for-profits and for-purpose organisations with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively advocate for their causes and navigate the complex landscape of government relations. Participants will gain a deep understanding of advocacy strategies, policy development, stakeholder engagement, and effective communication techniques to influence public policy and drive social change. Through practical case studies, interactive discussions, and expert guidance, this course equips participants with the tools they need to become successful advocates and engage with government stakeholders.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Understand the role and importance of advocacy for not-for-profits and for-purpose organisations in driving social change and influencing public policy.
2. Identify key stakeholders in the government and understand their roles and influence in the policy-making process.
3. Develop a comprehensive advocacy strategy with clear objectives, messages, and tactics aligned with organisational goals.
4. Build effective relationships with government stakeholders, including policymakers and officials, utilising appropriate communication and engagement strategies.
5. Navigate bureaucratic structures and decision-making processes within the government to effectively advocate for their causes.
6. Conduct policy research, analysis, and gap assessments to inform evidence-based policy recommendations and position statements.
7. Craft persuasive messaging tailored to different audiences, incorporating storytelling and data to convey the impact of their organisation's work.
8. Utilise a range of traditional and digital media channels for effective communication and outreach in advocacy efforts.
9. Mobilise successful advocacy campaigns by planning and executing strategic initiatives, engaging grassroots support, and utilising volunteer networks.
10. Monitor and evaluate the impact of advocacy efforts, utilising appropriate metrics and measurement tools to assess effectiveness.
11. Develop networking skills and build connections with experts and fellow participants through group coaching sessions, fostering collaborative learning and knowledge sharing.
12. Apply ethical considerations and adhere to best practices in advocacy and government relations, ensuring transparency and accountability in their activities.
13. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the policy-making process, from policy development to implementation and evaluation.
14. Adapt advocacy strategies and approaches to various contexts and policy environments, considering cultural, social, and political factors.
15. Reflect on their your organisation's advocacy efforts and identify opportunities for improvement and innovation.
Who is this course for?
Are you a CEO who knows how critical it is to build relationships with government stakeholders but aren’t sure how to do it systematically? Perhaps you’re a senior marketing or comms exec and now have GR and advocacy in our title? Or you’re a compliance or risk exec with responsibility for engaging with industry associations that work with government stakeholders. This course will equip you with the tools and confidence in government relations strategies, relationship building with government officials, and effective advocacy techniques.
This course is exclusively targeted at N4Ps and For-purpose organisations to ensure a cohort of like-minded and supportive participants. Each cohort is capped at a maximum of 5 participants to ensure quality feedback and interactions in the coaching circles.
